A (not-so) Brief History Of Dan

  • September 21, 1967: Born in Plainfield, New Jersey. A few days later, taken home by my parents, to our home in Colonia.

  • December 12, 1969: My sister Debbie was born. This, of course, totally shattered my faith in the universe.

  • November, 1972: We moved to the island of St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands, where I lived form the next 13 years. First, I attended the Montessori school, on the east end of the island, and then transferred into 5th grade in All Saints school, where I remained until graduation. We returned to NJ every summer to visit with family.

  • Spring 1980: After 15 years of marriage, my parents divorced. Since pop ended up living about a five minute walk away, and he drove me to school every morning, I still saw him all the time.

  • Spring 1985 - Spring 1988: After graduating from All Saints, I returned full-time to New Jersey, to do my undergraduate work at Seton Hall University. After a couple of years (and three majors), I decided I just wasn't cut out to deal with college at this point in my life. So I left.

  • Spring 1988 - December 1996: Spent the next decade plus working in retail. Everyting from a part-time grunt worker to a full-time store manager. Over the years, I worked for  Walden Books, Software Etc, and Radio Shack

  • Easter 1990: Converted to Catholicism: Technically, I'd been Jewish up to this point (I was 22 at the time), but non-practicing: no Hebrew school, no Bar Mitzvah, none of that. But I'd been spending most of my time with friends who were (well.. are, I suppose) Catholic, and something about it spoke to me. To this day, I can't say exactly what it was. So I went through the process, and at the Easter Vigil in 1990, I was officially baptized, and confirmed as a Catholic.

  • 1991:I stopped drinking. I discovered that if I didn't, there was a good chance I'd spend the rest of my life living down inside a bottle of something (probably vodka), and that'd make it rather difficult to live my life.

  • Summer 1992: I officially "came out" as a gay man. For some reason this came as no surprise to my father, nor to most of my friends. Why did it surprise me? I have no idea.

  • January 1997: Returned to my undergraduate work. Enrolled as a Continuing Education student, full time, at Drew University in Madison, NJ. Majored in History and minored in Medieval Studies

  • May 2000: Graduated with a BA in History.

  • June 2000:  Took a job with Drew University (actually, there's a number of university employees who end up working here right after they've graduated... it's kinda weird). I was employed in the Department of Telecommunications, as an assistant to the Manager.

  • July 2000: Found a two-bedroom apartment in Summit, NJ, which I shared with my Drew University suite-mate, Brian

  • July 2001: Brian's girlfriend (now wife) Katie moved up from Florida, and moved in. At the same time, I moved into a one-bedroom apartment upstairs.

  • September 2003:It turns out Catholic wasn't the end of my religious seeking. It was closer to what I wanted, but still didn't feel quite right. I toyed with Unitarian Universalism for a while. Easy enough access since my father and stepmother are Unitarians, and I spent plenty of time around their "church" (their quotes, not mine). Unitarianism didn't feel quite right either, and neither did the other groups (Pagan, neo-Pagan, and other) who used their space. So the seeking continued, and I found that there are people in today's world who still worship ancient Gods. In my case, those of ancient Greece. No, you don't have to worship all of the Gods/Goddesses. I don't know anyone who does. I'm dedicating myself to Apollon (those of you who know me will realize this makes sense). For more on this, take a look here.

  • August 2004: Visited dad and stepmother at their new home in Crestone Colorado. BEAUTIFUL place out there.

  • Early March 2005: Left Drew Universityto take a job with the College of New Jersey. I work in their IT department, as a member of the User Support Services Help Desk staff. It's a very different environment, but I'm enjoying it.  At the same time, I moved in with my friends Craig & Amy, into their townhouse apartment in Doylestown, PA, while I looked for my own place closer to work.

  • May 2005: Moved into my own apartment in Ewing, NJ

  • December 2005: Accepted into the Master of Arts in Teaching program at the College. I'm doing this part time, so it will take for me longer than the usual 18 months. Probably about three and a half years. But that's cool. When I'm done, I'll have a Masters degree as well as a certification to teach high school.

  • December 2006: Three days before our New Years Party, my doctor informed me that I have Type II Diabetes. Way to kill the new year Doc.

  • September 2007: Started the Internship I part of my graduate program. This is turning out to be quite a fun experience.

  • Health changes (mostly for the better): Thanks to Weight Watchers, I managed to lose 12.4 pounds in the year. I also brought my sugar levels under control (thanks to diet, and medication).

Hobbies and
Interests
The following is a list of things that are of interest to me. I've got pages for most of them, so you can follow the links and see where you go.
  • I'm very into theatre, especially the musical variety. I try and see a show ever year or two, but that doesn't always work out.
  • Ancient Greek religion
  • I'm an avid reader, preferring science fiction and fantasy (my favorite is, of course, JRR Tolkien).
  • Not that I'm not willing to watch TV too (especially science fiction).
  • I'm a big music buff: I sing Tenor, and spent 7 years with the Drew University Chorale
  • I'm colour blind
  • I'm also, probably as a result of my love of fiction, into role playing (not just around a table with friends, but also the online variety, and live action)
  • Also, as you would imagine from what you've read above, I'm very into Medieval stuff

Well...I guess that's enough about me for now. If you've any other questions, just ask.
