You Will Go Far

Why do I want to be a teacher?

There may be many reasons

But one stands out over all.

Somebody somewhere someway one day

Said to me, “You will go far in whatever you do,

And as long as I can, I will be here for you.”

Maybe it was just a timely smile.

Maybe it was a kind word

At the right time on a rough day.

I want to be that somebody

For someone who needs to learn

More of this world, more about life.

I want to unlock the brilliance

Buried in apathy or tucked behind

A wall of shyness.

I’m hoping this path will allow me

To say to somebody someway one day,

“You will go far in whatever you do,

And as long as I can, I will be here for you.”
